Drawing is fun, but then it's just stuck to the paper right? Woodworking is kind of like drawing but what ever you make is real! Go for it! The only thing is, you can't really make any money doing it so it's a hobby but it's the worlds greatest hobby! (That's true, look it up.)

Emily helped me make the guest room into a workshop. Guests are still welcome though.

I made two ray-guns for my nephews out of brass and mahogany. (only one is pictured)I carved this cedar sign at work.

Woodworking goofs.This is a box i made for an Eagles fanatic. i got too hasty and waisty on the hinge so it won't close right and has a gaping hole in the back.

this pencil sharpener is $400. It's from a company called El Casco. My pencil sharpener is from El Cosco and it works, but how do I know it's really working. I need to try this one to see what i'm missing. I'm gonna keep an eye out for this fella at garage sales etc.

My German friend at work is like, 54 or something and he's kind of frustrated with the United States for different reasons.

a) Philadelphia is underwhelmed with his laser animation projector even though it's the only one of it's kind in the city.
b) He has to work menial job at Trader J's and the Franklin Center even though he has a good degree from a German design school.

etc..

I asked him if he ever thought about moving to LA to work in the movie biz and he told me this (to be read with a German accent):

I went to hollywood when i was a very young man and i had my art work with me and everything, you know? and i asked a taxi driver, "who should i talk to to be in the movie business? I want to show my drawings." I did not know anything! I was a very young man! The taxi driver said ," Oh, you wont be able to talk to anybody, they're all so well protected." So i said, "Ok, ok, who would you talk to if you were me?" and he said ,"Well, I guess I'd talk to Kirk Douglas" I said ,"Ok, do you know where to find him?" he said, "Yeah, i'll take you to his house" He was one of the only ones that lived in a house without a gate, you know? so i went to the door and knocked and this man answered, not Kirk Douglas, and i said, "I want to show Mr. Douglas my drawings." and the man tried to shut the door on me but i pushed back, you know, on the other side and he was getting very pissed off! Then, a Porsche.. a Porsche, you know the car? pulled up and Kirk Douglas came out. He said, "Hey, how's it going?" I was in such shock that I could not speak! I just stood there holding my drawings, you know, staring at him and he went inside and that was it! I never talked to him!

Last week our friends Matt and Lisa came to philadelphia. We did a great job of unwinding, which is the process of becoming stress free. If the band "unwound" really lived up to their name they would look a little more like this.

this is the band we saw at the pinical of our unwinding which took place in amish country. The amish rule. The only problem i have with them is asthetic. Everything about their lifestyle looks great except their beards. The beards are fine but they need a mustache in my opinion.

Eww, yuck, stupid, i hate it.

one of my favorite parts was the gooooood flea markets and antique stores they have there. since power tools have been banned from trader joe's i've realized that hand tools are quiet, functional and not that much slower than power tools. the flea markets are chock full of very useful and sturdy hand tools along with a lot of cool old things . I have a German friend at work and he told me the amish speak german but it's hard to understand because it's from 150 years ago. what do you think about that? I want to be amish. I would have a little wooden chest at the end of my bed with a hand forged brass lock on it. Inside would be a laptop, an ipod and beer making supplies which i would use after everyone went to bed. And i would have a mustache.

Latest obsession

I'm obsessed with woodworking now. I got away from bikes. That went on for like 9 months. Then i was like, "i can't afford the bikes i want. I wish I were dead!" If I could make a bike from scratch that would rule but i can't. With woodworking you can make whatever you want (that's not really true but anyway). My symptoms are:

Going to the library on my lunch break twice a week to learn about woodworking. I've already checked out and read all the books that interest me, so now i make photocopies of Fine Woodworking magazine and read them on the train ride home. Weird?

Being on constant alert for things made out of hardwood. I can't take people throwing away antique furniture. I have a meltdown inside every wednesday morning because, "I'll miss the train if I turn around and take this__________(fill in the blank) home right now, but i can't let this oak ______(fill in the blank) go to the dump! AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRG!"

Projects so far:A box for pictures etc. I wanted to try dovetail joinery, the hallmark of fine craftsmanship. Mine are just a little wonky but, "handmade charm" right?

I tried a little carving at work on this and another sign. I don't think i'll do it again. It took too long and put me behind.

The bread rack at work kept breaking from shopping carts. I made this one to absorb impact thanks to it's integrated suspension.

See, the middle shelves just wiggle when hit.

This is cheating to show this because it was made before my obsession but i felt i needed to fluff up my projects section a bit. this is a pedal board for guitar distortion pedals. You can leave everything plugged into each other and not have to assemble everything every time you play somewhere. I painted an indian on it to give it some pazzaz.

Future projects:I found this broken- ass chair on the curb. it's danish modern and will be really cool if i fix it right.

I'm working on a bunk bed for regis, our cat. It'll be mahogany and walnut. here's what it looks like right now.Just a bunch of cut up wood in a bag but, lord willing, it will look like this:
I also plan to make a tv cabinet that doesn't look like a tv cabinet.

My dream came true and they opened a car museum in philadelphia! Didn't you hear what i said!? oh, you don't care. Anyway, people were telling me a car museum opened and i was like, "that's cool, it's probably nascar or something but that's cool." But I looked at the website and it wasn't nascar. Heck, there were barely even any american cars there. Just fine, vintage, european sportscars. my favorite!Hey, where is this place? Oh, i know! I think we just go this way a couple blocks. It's hot out here! I'm not familiar with this part of town. Maybe it's down this way.We found it! And it's even open!
Alpha Romeo! so far so good!I don't know what to do. What happens when all your dreams come true?

My 30th Birthday Part I

I had a great, classic birthday. "What kind of brand new drug did you do for your birthday?" you might ask. I didn't do any drugs! We didn't even got to a bar! We didn't even go to any peep shows! We didn't even hide any cameras in any sororities! It was really fun though. Ice cream parlor and arcade. See? classic!
First we went to The Franklin Fountain. I may have talked about it before. It's old fashioned. The early 1900's must have been the golden age of sweets. (no, i don't know that cause i was there. i wasn't born until 1978 jerk!) A lot of ice cream parlors look like they're inspired by that period. Barber shop quartets too. I notice little things sometimes.
I felt like number one because strangers kept wishing me happy birthday.

Here I'm holding up 3 fingers to represent my 30 years. the fact that it's also the sign of the gang i go to on tuesdays and weekends is a coincidence.

ON TO THE ARCADEI like this kind of basketball. I'm not letting anyone down .This is going great. i didn't even day dream and drift off like when i play real basketball.
Head to head competition. Catch the fever.
Hmmmmm. Ipod, wii, dyson, flat screen.......

We did see some strippers but they were so small they don't count.

wow, we had a great time with the bethancourts. they'd already been to philly so we mostly focused on enjoying ourselves and takin' 'er easy instead of another philly tour. it was awesome i tell you. this weekend reinforced my belief in fun. always, always fun. foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

the philly car show came here last week. i went alone which i seriously don't mind a bit.it was very fun. should i say it was fun or should i say it temporarily extinguished and insatiable desire planted in me at a very early age by my father?

Arizona Trip

emily and i had a great trip to arizona. i'm so happy i came out about my obsession with cars (and other things with glassy paint jobs). people seem to be very understanding. the arizona crew took me to 2 car shows. nice of um.

first, these girls made some cupcakes for the shower.
then hashifa sang karaoke -guantanamera!

then my nephew and i played HOT WHEELS!then we went to the first car show.

i want a go cart like this.

some great motorcycles with wonderful paint jobs.

the next day just emilys dad and i went to the barret jackson auction you might have seen on tv.
the first section was full of stuff a millionare might put in his 20 car garage/ hangout.
tons of restored neon signs along with kids rides, stuffed buffalo, western sculptures etc.
this boat was one of the best things in the world thanks to it's beautiful brass hardware and mahogany hull.

i want to make a toy of this

this is already like a toy so it'd be redundant to make a toy out of it

Here's a fun activity you may want to try. i color coded my 3rd grade class picture. green for my friends, red for my enemies and pink for the girls i thought were dynamite. click on the picture to look at it big.

items of note: David im-r looks like the devil in his little brown vest doesn't he? he had me in a headlock and told me he was going to cut my dick off and bury it in the gravel. just a horrible kid. i got along with him only one time when he asked me if i wanted to throw dirt clods (from the rototiller) at some kids sitting on the soccer field. i said "sure!"

i was obsessed with darcy ell-s. she had her birthday party at casa bonita. i hated the goody-goody-sunday-morning-shirt my mom made me wear so i cried in her mom's van on the way there. no big deal. darcy liked me but she liked phillip j-hnson a little more and my mom was not helping by putting me in obnoxiously colored rugby shirts.

charles s-ms taught me a funny little racist rhyme. i thought it was darling little limerick so i adopted it into my repetiour. my parents heard me recite my little gem and had a long talk with me about racism. the main bullet point being that if a black person heard me saying that word they would beat me up. charles also was fond of playing a confusing game with vague rules called "guns". as in ," hey, do you want to play guns." "uh... ok. what's 'guns'?"

the big apple

i love living near the big apple. it never disappoints. emily and i had a pterrific ptime with these ptwo pterodactyls. they know how to show a good time.
this band in the subway was top notch. the drummer was a better drummer than me, the trumpeter played trumpet better than me and the guitar player played better than me. it looked like they were making a lot of money too.
as the subway approached a woman said, "the special train!" which was a restored 1930's subway train complete with woven seats, brass hardware and fixtures, bare light bulbs, ceiling fans, period maps and advertisements etc. somebody say, "hell yeah!" we had fun.
the natural history museum has many dinosaur bones. i love 'um. i love the prehistoric mammals even more. they have a elephant relative with two giant teeth like a shovel. can you imagine?
the girls like dinosaurs too- lucky us (matt and i).

this fellow was mummified meaning he had fossilized skin and soft tissue on his bones. wow.

love this turtle. he's real big.
one of my all time favorite murals is at the museum. it's all over the place, it's gorgeous and thrilling but this is the best photo i got of it. it was too hard to get a good shot! i'd like to see you do better! oh,every one's a critic.

my favorite part of the animal dioramas are the oil paintings behind the animals. they are just incredible in my opinion. let's see picasso paint that! oh i know what you're going to say, "actually picasso was as good a draftsman and figurative painter as anyone!" oh please, what art history teacher told you that? what textbook have you been reading? don't worry, i'm not going to call your teacher, i just want to know! can'tcha tell me?

emily's reminded of little regis. she really missed that little nightmare.
I was excited to go to the big apple to see the christmas window displays(one of my many dream jobs). they did not disappoint.

this one had three dynamite 1940's harley's. you know, like the one santa rides (according to the painting in the display.
i was fascinated by this cool plywood bicycle. maybe i could make one like that someday.
we were freezing. but we still had fun.

i'm not obsessed with european sports car anymore. flush ferraris down the toilet please.looks likes my poor brain will probably be spinning out of control with bikes for a while. someone at work wanted to know if i wanted a free bike. i went and looked at it and it had lugs and stuff so i said i wanted it. it looked like it would be good for emily so now I'm back to bikes. it looked pretty much like this when i got it. only rustier.i want it to look like this bilenky.
or this beautiful mariposa.
so far it looks like this. i still need fenders lights and racks.
there's a bike co-op by my house called bike church in the basement of a church. it rules. it is so fun. you fix up your bike and there's volunteer bike mechanics walking around to help you. you like, buy parts for $3.00 and stuff. i've never paid $3.00 for ferrari parts which is why i'm devoted to bikes now. horray!

ive been carrying my camera around and i took pictures of signs i thought were cool.

somebody did a beautiful lettering job on this store front a long time ago.

they were going to tear this masterpiece down. don't worry. they're not now. they're building condos and keeping the facade. ok good enough.
here is a brand new sign that i find thrilling. the guy who made it lives just around the corner from us (i'm told). i wanna go hang around his shop and stare at him while he works but i need someone to introduce me.
another newish sign. its gorgeous don't you think? i should have gotten a picture of the terrific lowrider bikes inside.
this bar has a beautiful and stylish facade. if you go up close it's just boards cut and painted. very clever!
i love this sign . i was hoping it was painted but the way it's peeling you can tell it's vinyl. oh well. it's cool anyway.
neat, the way this tree grew around this old fence . i was like, "cool."
speaking of cool. somebody did a terrific job sooping up this fairly dorky car. look at the way the roll bar ends in bullet lights.

aren't you happy you live in a world where this sort of thing exists. as if mini cars weren't already one of the greatest things in the world someone takes it one step further and builds a mini trailer and mini boat for his 1963 king midget. this is not a kid's car or a go cart but a real car and real boat for a real sized person only it's tiny! it's ok to get a little teary eyed when you're emotional. go on.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. i wish i still lived in fullerton. then i could see a show of my 2nd favorite illustrator j c leyendecker (first is n. c. wyeth).
this guy rules. everything looks like its made out of silk and gold. they never show him anywhere. norman rockwell wished he was him. according to another blog rockwell wanted to know what brushes he used, if he painted standing or sitting and every detail about his technique.
even his signature is brilliant.
the show is going on now at the fullerton musem. it's not coming here till 09. errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

yeah! yeah! we did it! it's done. it's over. time to solve the next problem. we figured out how to make a self tuning guitar. (we meaning humans). gibson's going to sell it. it has a dedicated peizo pickup under each string that sends a signal to tiny motors attached to the tuning machines that make the string tighter or looser. yes! will this destroy stage banter? stay tuned.

Most people i know don't care at all about cars. or if they do they don't see the point in going to a car show to look at things they can't afford. i like looking at cars i cant afford. i like looking at rembrandts i can't afford too. as a public service lets look at some dream cars that are cool and you could maybe buy one.

the first one that comes to mind is the VW type 3. it's cute. it looks like a from a 50s illustration. here's the fast back.\

even if you had millions of dollars most of you wouldn't drive this pininfarina Maserati birdcage because it would seem "ridiculous". (you're dead wrong but whatever)
here's one of my dream cars that's a little more practical.

the mercedes diesel wagon is sophistcated, useful and classic. they look best if they're painted a cool color like redish orange or a muted green.
i'm bored of this subject but used volvos and audis are also cool.

i know it's very boring when someone tells you they had a crazy dream but try and see if this is boring. i dreamed i went to Baghdad for work and it really wasn't that bad. a lot of the businesses were still open and they had a lot of cool signs and stuff. then i met up with jerry and elaine from seinfeld and hung out with them in an office in the middle of a war zone . that's where they've both been since the shows been off the air.

then i dreamed about them two more times since then!

i want to go to france. i feel i would be inspired if i went to france. i've been loving the french versions of everything i already love. i love signs, cars, bikes, motorcycles, buildings, and guitars. the french design aesthetic seems to me like- this can be fun, lets try and enjoy ourselves. ok?

this site has great signs from france which inspire me so i try to copy them. mine look a little dopey though, i call it hand made charm

i love citroens. this 2cv looks so homemade i want to eat it. there's one down the street and i tried to eat it. i was so embarrassed when i realized what i was doing. this citroen ds had hydraulic suspension in 1957(!). the back goes up and down.

i love french constructeurs. they're like bike builders but they make the parts for the bike too. not just the frame. the best are rene herse and alex singer. although both guys are dead you can still buy an alex singer from his shop in paris. it's run by his son (? or something)
ok, i don't care that much about french motorcycles, you all know more than me about france's architecture and i can only think of one french guitar and that's the maccaferri as played by django reinhardt and seen in the movie sweet and lowdown. i do want one but it's not my favorite

first, sorry to everyone that was waiting for me to post pictures of bugattis and alfa romeos on a flickr page. i ...won't be going to the new york car show. i had the year wrong. the day and month were right on. it's not until september 2008. so...sorry matt b. i promise, this is the last dumb thing i do.

next, i wanna say that this new(ish) detective on law and order is cute. she looks really like, no nonsense or something.
i admitted this to emily during an episode and she stared at me like i was a perverted pedophile sitting right in the room with her. she said, " she look exactly like a boy! do you like little boys?" i argued that i thought she was hot and the producers wouldn't have put her on the show if they didn't think she was hot too. she said that hollywood was run by gay men. i don't care.i will admit that she looks a little like alfalfa, who i don't find attractive.

while i was looking at the law and order site to get these pictures i found out her character's name is detective wheeler. but all these people left comments talkin shit about her saying, like, don't put her on the show anymore . i feel like no one has any taste in detectives.

speaking of taste. here are some thing that i think look great and i have to say, "awesome!" when i see them. do i have any brothers or sisters out there who agree with me or do i have bad, boring taste in everything.

i hate my stupid blog. all my beautiful pointy cars are dissapearing. i can't see pictures so im mad. i want to talk about trader joe's but i don't want to get fired or in trouble so i wont. one time a guy at work was like,"hey, there's people talking about ______ on myspace!" and i was like, " really what are they saying?" "oh, he is not doing well over at his new store! you gotta read it!" i said, " where do i find it?" he said, "just search for______. you''ll find it." so i went home and i couldn't find it. i ended up just searching "trader joe's sucks" i clicked on one of the posts and it looked familiar because it was my blog! woops.

i want to talk about super cars more but i think i'll save it. i don't want to bore my dear readers.

i looove pointy cars. they remind me of the futuristic stuff i loved as a kid. back to the future, blade runner, transformers etc. here are my top picks for best pointy cars

1980 aston martin bulldog. i like the headlights especially. the side looks kinda boring though.

i already showed this 1970 ferrari modulo last week but i'm showing it again because it got me thinking about pointy cars in the first place. this thing is only 3 feet high! praise the lord!

the classic lotus esprit pretty much rules. i want one of these.
i don't know anything about this one except it is a very pointy concept car called an italdesign caimano from 1971.

this is the lancia stratos zero from 1970. those two rectangles on the side are its windows. that's the spirit!

this vector was designed in 1972 as like, an american lamborghini. the guy never really got it off the ground. he just made a bunch of versions of what the vector was going to be like once it went into production.the car looked like this until 1996! awesome.

it's evil looks got it a staring role in this movie. congratulations!

lamborghini countach 1972-1989. hurray! its so pointy!

i love ferraris. miami vice had wrecked their black ferrari on the show which i wasn't that into anyway. i thought it was a corvette. as a replacement sonny and tubbs got this. i asked my dad,"what....the fuck...is that!" he said it was a ferrari testarossa and that he saw one in california. so i was obsessed with ferraris ever since.

now, look at this ferrari. is this the ugliest ferrari in the world?

it is a one off 1953 166 mm with an abarth body. wow.

more company please. i'm addicted to fun. first it was lisa and matt- they were a dream come true. then it was amanda, andrew and esly- they were a treat from heaven. then it was matt and lisa again- this time instead of being a dream come true they were a treat sent from heaven too. then it was alison- she was a wonderful dream from heaven. now i hear we're getting emily's friend tabitha- that should be a good and emily's sisters, who invited me to see conan even though emily said i wasn't going on account of that fact that i wasn't a girl. she should know that i had two sisters and i know how to be quiet when they're talking shit about their friends and family. no worries!

so there i was painting the words "school uniforms" on an awning in the fashion district of LA, worrying about my car and it's meter , when it came to me. i thought," you know, i don't haul around that much stuff, this would be a little more fun if i just rode a bike around and took all my stuff with me." that's where i came up with my signs on a bike business. i discovered that every annoying thing you have to go do is a kinda fun on a bike. shopping, christmas shopping, grocery shopping were all a little more fun on a bike.

i'd like one like this so i can carry my stuff around and have a nice sign in the middle advertising my services like this.

here are my designs i created on the train for my bike. here are some logo ideas i doodled on the train.

i painted names on bikes and i'm doing some logos and stuff
im trying to trade them for this bike that's just kind of a prototype that hangs around.

i can't remember my password to my old blog and i couldn't figure out how to retrieve it that well so i created the new yes lets. there will be a few changes . the biggest being i am now allowed to talk about my obsessions. secret obsessions. don't worry, nothing filthy. for example, cars. classic european cars like this bugatti . this one happens to belong to ralph lauren who generously allowed me to use this photo. the ribs that go down the center of the fenders and roof are there because they weren't good at welding alloy metals at the time so instead ..... is this too boring?

matt b. and i are going to the central park concourse d'elegance car show (lord willing) the 29th of this month which will give me a chance to say,"cooooooooool!" over and over again. don't worry about me though, i still think cars are evil polluters destroying the earth. are you familiar with the term cognitive dissonance? i am.

i am also allowed to talk about bicycles. namely utilitarian bikes. like these super fancy Rene Herse porteur bikes were used to deliver bundles of news papers around paris, france.
